How to Believe in Yourself When You Don’t Believe in Yourself
I get asked often, how do I believe in myself when I don’t trust my abilities or when I am just getting started with something.
I finally watched I Feel Pretty a few months ago and while it’s a chick flick and some people won’t be able to relate to its storyline about body positivity, the message is universal:
Unless you change how you think, nothing around you will ever change.
You experience the world as YOU are.
So Amy wakes up one day, looks at herself in the mirror, and sees that she’s all of the sudden pretty. She loves her stomach that she hated before. Her face is all of the sudden not so round. She’s finally pretty! And with this new found love for the way she looks, she goes about her regular day. NOTHING in her day or her appearance has changed expect for how she sees herself. But all of the sudden, everything is different. She sees opportunities that she never saw before. She takes chances that she passed up on in the past. She thinks that just because she’s “pretty” now, she can do and get anything that she wants.
As the viewer, you can see that nothing changed in her external world but everything changed within her. So if you’re waiting for the timing to be right, for you to have enough money, for your kids to grow up and leave the house, for you to retire, for the right time to quit, for that perfect job…none that will ever happen. Look within.
You must change first before anything in your world changes.
When you’re starting something new, it’s easy to get stuck in this “I don’t know what to start with, it’s too huge and scary so I’ll just stay where I’m at” mentality. The truth is that you’ve been a beginner your whole life. Everything that you have ever started, you have been a beginner at. When you started walking, you were a beginner. When you started talking, you were a beginner. You didn’t wait until you were good at walking before you actually took those first steps. And after you fell, you got back up and tried again. You didn’t swear off walking for the rest of your life just because you fell.
You’re already an expert at starting things!
So today, instead of putting off doing those things that bring you joy, I say you just start. All it takes is 15-20 minutes a day. Nothing more. What’s one small step you can take today to bring you a small step closer to that thing that sets your soul on fire?
Just do it today. Remember that if you wait for tomorrow, it never comes.
You got this! I believe in YOU!
Putting it into action:
Get out a pen and paper and let’s do some work!
In what area of your life are you making excuses? What is it that you’ve been wanting to do but keep waiting for the “right time?”
What is one small thing that you can do today which will bring you joy and get you closer to where you want to be? Think of something that will take you 15-20 minutes. It might be researching how to start your own blog, or sitting down to write a short poem, maybe it’s going out to buy paint and canvas…whatever it is, you can take a small step right now to get you closer to that thing that sets your soul on fire.
