This is Why You’re Not Successful

The one thing that everyone always wants to know, at any stage of their life: How to be (more) successful.

I recently did a poll on Instagram and asked my followers what they think is keeping them from being successful. Here are the top three answers.

  1. I don’t have enough time.

    By far, the number one thing that I hear people say is that they don’t have time. And this is what I have to say to that…can we just stop using this excuse? No one has time, we make time.

Why would you think that 24 hours is enough for Tony Robbins but not you? I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying, “If it’s important to you you’ll make the time, if not, you’ll make an excuse,” It’s so easy for us to just say “I don’t have time,” and move on. But if you’re going to be successful, it’s going to take just that, time. Are you willing to go to bed 15 minutes late and wake up 15 minutes early? That gives you 30 minutes to work on your dreams. Are you willing to use your lunch hour to work on your side gig? Are you willing to say no to family and friends so you can use that time to set up the right foundations for the next step in your life?

It’s not perfect so I can’t put it out to the world.

Let’s put this to rest once and for all: Nothing you do will ever be perfect! That’s it. End of story. What seems perfect to you, might seem unfinished to someone else. What seems less than perfect to you might be exactly what someone else needs. It’s all subjective. Just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so is perfection.

Go for progress, not perfection.

3. What will people say?

Let’s be honest, people will always say something. When was the last time you did something, anything at all, and no one had an opinion? Whether you ask for other people's opinions or not, I can guarantee you that you will get it. If there is one thing that there is no shortage of in this world, it’s opinions. If you’re really going to be successful, you have to simply not care what other people think.

So, which one of these excuses are you using to keep yourself from being successful?

Putting it into action:

  • Start paying attention to the excuses that you are using to keep you from actually doing things. When you first get an idea and get all excited about it, what are the thoughts that follow? I’ll never be able to do that? I don’t have the time? That will never work for me? What will other people say? Most of the time, simply noticing how many excuses you actually make, might put an end to it.

  • Write all your excuses down on a piece of paper. As you start noticing your excuses for a particular project, task, or idea, write them all down. Dedicate 10 minutes to “excuse writing.” Once you have all the excuses you can think of, shred it up and throw it away. Cut the cord from those excuses, you don’t need them and none of them are serving you.
