Your Zone of Genius

Have you found your zone of genius yet? That thing that makes you…YOU. It’s the key to doing work that feels fulfilling.

Here’s something to help you find work that’s meaningful:

figure out your zone of genius. It’s going to help you to FINALLY get started on the life of your dreams.

It’s super easy to get our zone of excellence and zone of genius mixed up.

Your zone of excellence is what you were taught. It’s what you went to school for, what you got degrees in, and the things that you learned on the job. Those are things that you are good at because you received training in them. For example, for a surgeon, operating is her zone of excellence. She went to school for many many years for that skill.

Your zone of genius is something that you were born with.

It might have evolved from when you were younger and you most likely honed in on it and refined it. But it’s not something that you were taught. Going back to that surgeon, her zone of genius might be attention to detail. She might have been that little kid who noticed everything, remembered every detail and always pointed out how the neighbor’s kid was doing something that he wasn’t supposed to be doing. Having trained many teams, I know that attention to detail, for the most part, is not a skill that people can learn. Either you have it within you or you don’t.

If you can find your zone of genius and live in it, unapologetically live in it, you’re going to be living the live of your dreams.

Here’s what to do:

  1. Read the definitions above

  2. Start thinking about what traits you had when you were a kid (can’t think of any? Ask your parents, friends you’ve had growing up, and anyone else who are known you since you were a kid)

  3. Write them down

  4. Evaluate them and start doing things that allow you to use MORE of those traits

  5. LIVE in your zone of genius

Remember: Do NOT judge yourself based on a skill that you do not possess. That is not your zone genius. The skill that you were born with is YOUR zone of genius.

Which brings me to one of my most favorite quote: (not too sure who said this. Some people say it’s Albert Einstein but the History Channel disagrees…)

Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Everyone has their own gifts. It’s not yours to judge. Those who are the most successful and fulfilled are those who are able to figure out what their zone of genius is and are able to run with it.

See, I told you that YOU are a genius!
